List of Honors Colleges/Programs

Honors colleges are special sections within larger universities designed for highly motivated and academically gifted students. Unlike regular college programs, they offer a more rigorous curriculum, smaller class sizes, and often more personalized attention from faculty. The concept of honors colleges has been around for decades, with some, like the Honors College at the University of Michigan, established as early as 1957.

Students who attend honors programs are usually those who have excelled in their high school academics, showing not just high grades but also a passion for learning and intellectual curiosity. These students often seek more challenging academic environments and opportunities for research, leadership, and specialized learning experiences.

The requirements can vary to get into an honors program but generally include a high GPA (usually above 3.5), strong SAT or ACT scores, and sometimes essays or interviews. Some colleges also look at extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and community service as part of their selection criteria.

According to the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), there are over 1,000 honors colleges and programs in the United States. Statistics show that students in these programs often have higher retention and graduation rates compared to their non-honors counterparts. For instance, the University of South Carolina's Honors College reported a 93% graduation rate, significantly higher than the national average of around 60%.

Below, you'll find a list of such colleges, each linked to its profile page, where you will find stats sourced from the National Center for Education Statistics. Whether you're looking for small class sizes, research opportunities, or a tight-knit academic community, these colleges might have exactly what you're looking for.
